The 1863 1C J-300 utilizes the regular dies of 1863 on a Copper-Nickel planchet, but with a reeded edge (instead of the normal plain edge). Saul Teichman (www.uspatterns.com) calls these fantasy pieces, which is probably accurate since reeded edge Cents were never seriously considered, nor were Copper-Nickel cents ever in danger of being “clipped” as were the silver and gold coins. The Judd-300 is found with either a high date or a low date in both Proof and Uncirculated versions. The low date version appears to be the scarcer of the two, though both types are difficult to locate.
