So sorry for the delay in posting my report - I've been swamped with paperwork and processing coins, as well as Grandma duties on Tuesdays! What do the Morro Castle cruise ship fire, the Hauptmann Lindbergh kidnapping trial, South Pole explorer Admiral Byrd, World Heavyweight Champion Boxer Joe Louis, the Lord’s Prayer, and Santa Claus have in common? Interestingly, they are all the subjects of “Capped Cents” created in the 1930’s by entrepreneurial numismatist Louis Werner who referred to them as his “Novel Cents. ” . Louis S. Werner was born in New York in 1893. He was an active and innovative numismatist for 63 years who specialized in Jewish coins and U. S. paper money. Werner was instrumental in identifying, tracking down and convicting a major counterfeiter of commemorative half dollars. He also assembled one of the finest and most complete collections of numismatic Judaica and then donated the collection to the State Museum in Jerusalem in 1965. Werner was a very active member of the American Numismatic Association and received several prestigious awards, including the ANA’s Medal of Merit the second year it was awarded, the Farran Zerbe Memorial Award in 1959, and was named ANA Sergeant-at-Arms Emeritus in 1961. Because grading is subjective, however, there are (strong) disagreements when it comes to grading coins, especially trying to grade from photographs or scans, which of course can be difficult to get an accurate grade since you can't turn the coin under the light to see all the flaws, toning, amount of luster, discoloration, rim issues, etc. I know a lot has been written about standards, opinions, and subjectivity in grading, but I thought I'd share some of my experiences and thoughts on learning to grade coins. GRADING IS VERY SUBJECTIVE As has been said many times, grading is subjective, so it's difficult to create a tried and true standard since that involves using various individuals' personal opinions. Even the published guides have different ideas and criteria compared to each other, since they were written by humans using their own idea of what is important in assigning a grade. And if you take grading practices from 20+ years ago, most collectors know that grading has changed quite a bit since then (meaning gotten loser). That's why coins in older third party grading (TPG) holders from the 1980's to early 1990's (PCGS "rattler" and “old green holders” and NGC "fattie" holders) garner higher prices since many times they can be recertified into holders with higher grades (several dealers actually make their living playing this "crack out" game). Grading... Dealer War Stories Dealer War Stories The above cartoon humorously illustrates an exchange many dealers encounter at almost every coin show or coin shop. This customer/dealer interaction is only one type of scenario that I refer to as a dealer “war story. ” In the legal field, we used the phrase “war story” to describe dramatic or contentious courtroom experiences or particularly frustrating or funny situations with clients or opposing counsel, etc. I also found this apt definition on the internet: A recounting of a memorable personal experience, especially one involving challenge, hardship, danger, or other interesting features. I know many of you collectors have had uncomfortable or unpleasant experiences when buying coins from a dealer at a show or at your local coin shop. Sometimes it makes you question whether you should continue in this hobby since these experiences can bring frustrations and even anger that you might feel are just not worth it. Well, of course, let me say that I personally love coins and wouldn’t want to have to give them up, even for the (thankfully) far-and-few-between unpleasant people I encounter as a dealer – both collectors and other dealers! So I’d like to relate some stories about my experiences with a few disagreeable customers that will perhaps let you to see things from the other side of the table and at the same time allow me an opportunity to “vent” just a little and perhaps even elicit a little sympathy! When dealing with all my customers, I always keep... The Blog The Blog Beware! It crawls... . It creeps... . It eats you alive! The indestructible creature! Bloated with the blood of its victims! Terror has no shape - scream now, while there’s still room to breathe! If it had a mind, you could reason with it. If it had a face, you could look it in the eye. And if it had a body, you could shoot it. These lines were some of the taglines from the 1958 classic horror movie “The Blob” starring a very young Steve McQueen about an alien lifeform that consumes everything in its path as it grows and grows. I don’t know about you, but if you’re not careful, participating in online blogging can sometimes seem like the same thing. Perhaps some of you can have experienced how The Blog may seem harmless and innocuous one minute, but can quickly snowball into a destructive man-eating lifeform the next minute! The term “blog” was coined in mid-1999 and is a contraction of "web log. It is these community forums that tend to draw more controversy and seem to take on a life of their own, which is sometimes not all that positive, so blogging on community forums will... A Day In the Life... A Day (or Two) in the Life of a Coin Dealer One Dealer’s Account of Planning, Preparing for, and Participating in a Coin Show I read a lot of stories by coin collectors about their experiences at a particular coin show, some for the first time, while other more advanced collectors detail their hunt for a particular long-sought after coin. Many of these accounts include their personal interactions with specific dealers, both good and bad, whether they are working with long-time large dealer companies, or small mom and pop-type dealers, how they were treated by the dealer, the quantity and quality (or lack thereof) of a particular dealer’s coins, and especially whether they got a "good deal" or felt "ripped off" – some of these accounts even include what the dealer was wearing or eating at that time the collector stopped by their table! So I thought it might be interesting for collectors to see what it’s like to be on the other side of that table, to be a coin dealer - in my case, a sole practitioner coin dealer. By the way, even though I am a female dealer, I don’t think it really makes much difference since I’m pretty sure what I do as a dealer is not unique to being female. Well, one exception might be that I like my booth to be attractive and color coordinated, which some might consider more of a feminine trait! So the following is pretty typical of what it’s like... The Penny Lady Story Charmy acquired her passion for coins late in life after inheriting a group of coins from her aunt. Not knowing anything about coins, she chose one type of coin – Indian cents – and learned everything she could about them. I personally enjoy attending this show as it is very well-organized, always busy and very well attended especially on Thursday, O'Hare is a centrally located airport with direct flights from most parts of the country, there's usually no weather problems, and the show is in the convention room of the hotel where I'm staying so there's no traveling between them - not to mention the Renaissance is a beautiful hotel with a really fun bar where many dealers and collectors go for social gatherings after the show! So I left sunny OC for the show on Tuesday morning so I'd arrive in time for PNG Dealer Day set up the next morning. I was very happy I had no issues or delays and arrived on time in Chicago early that evening where it was surprisingly warm. For me, and many others who have participated in the Long Beach show over the past many years, we are saddened by this. Of course, there was lots of talk about other possibilities with regard to continuing a large show in California, or even just west of the Mississippi. There are rumors that a conglomerate of dealers may get together to put on a new show in Southern California, suggesting various locations from Los Angeles to Orange County to the Inland Empire, etc. There were even rumors that Collectors Universe may not be completely finished with this show, that they may revamp it at another less expensive location, and cut back on how many times a year it is held, and even limit it to just coins so they would not need as large of a venue. Whatever happens, it is clear that most of the dealers and collectors who attend the Long Beach show would like to have another large show in the California area to attend, and I for one feel there is a definite need for a large show in California, especially Southern California where there are plenty of resources and deep pockets. I very much look forward to setting up at the FUN show each year as it has always been one of, if not the best, show of the year - and this year's show was fantastic and didn't disappoint! Every dealer I spoke with said they were very busy starting Wednesday all the way through Friday and had a very successful show. Seriously, the FUN board, Katie and her staff really did a stellar job putting this show together with very few hitches. I was also very excited and looking forward to bringing to the FUN show a small group of amazing RED Indian cents that I recently received from a customer on consignment (sorry for the shameless plug here but these coins are some of the most beautiful high quality Indian cents I've been fortunate enough of offer for sale and I think warrant being highlighted)! As you can guess, the 1877 received a lot of attention throughout the show! So I left sunny OC early on Tuesday. We were having the beginning of the dry gusty Santa Ana winds that were predicted to be very strong for several days so, instead of taking off west over the ocean and then turning east, the planes were taking off directly east into the winds. I went through Dallas and landed in Orlando that evening gratefully with no... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports First, let me just comment that the Tampa Convention Center area is in a beautiful area of Tampa, right on the bay. Now of course I've read some of the other show reports, including Abby's excellent (albeit disappointing) adventure, so I will try not to "beat a dead horse" as they say. However, there are some things I would like to express my opinion about this show. First, here are some of the positive aspects I personally observed (in no particular order of importance): I believe Larry and Coin World worked hard and had a heavy wide-spread marketing campaign (contrary to what a couple other folks have mentioned), including social media, in person announcements a year in advance, email and print ads, signage and even a television promo. They even enlisted marketing assistance from all the sponsors who signed up through their own dealer social media and email contacts. Their crew put on several educational talks throughout the show, featuring well known industry leaders. The bourse floor was well organized and set up with very few hitches (as far as I could tell, nor did I hear much grumbling from other dealers, except for a couple last-minute table changes). They had several show helpers who would stop by and ask the dealers if we needed anything, even retrieving lunch for us from the snack bar. There was a special room set up for all of the sponsors where the sponsors could have a few minutes to relax, grab some beverages... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports So this report/photos will be a bit shorter than my usual reports because I am leaving for the Tampa show in the morning and have a lot of work to do before I head out. But I did manage to take a few photos around the bourse. First, there have been discussions about the unusual airport-type security that was instituted at this show, and while it really didn't make much sense since coin show thieves don't usually need/use weapons to perform their nefarious tasks, I think trying some new security measures is better than doing nothing. The screening didn't impact table holders as we were directed around the metal detectors so it didn't matter if we had any "personal protection devices" with us. I also understand that this new security protocol was instituted by the convention center, and not Collectors Universe. I also heard there were more undercover security guards wandering around the bourse, and I didn't hear that there were any theft issues at this show, so perhaps whatever measures good or bad that were in place did help discourage thievery. I know that having the Tampa show butt up against this show caused some dealers who usually set up at the LB show not to participate in this show, especially some out of state dealers, but also some local ones too. However, even though there were a few empty tables towards the back of the room, the show was very busy on Thursday as usual, slow on Friday,... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports Let me start off by saying that this show was one BIG HUGE show - I mean physically, the bourse floor seemed much larger with 19 wide spacious rows from end to end. At one point, I needed a new lightbulb for my lamp and since I was alone at my table, I didn't want to make the 15-20 minute trek from my table all the way to the far back corner of the room to get one, so I actually paid a page a few dollars to retrieve one for me! In any event, for me this show was a big success, super busy, lots of sales, some great new purchases, entertaining dinners with good friends, fun after-dinner meet-ups at the Hyatt bar, club meetings, and ending with a wonderful end-of-show ANA awards banquet! My trip started out smoothly and uneventful on Sunday. I arrived at the airport early as usual, and grabbed a glass of wine since the Vino wine bar was directly across from my gate and I could watch from there when it was time to line up! The view of the Newport Coast as we take off over the ocean never gets old! I settled in for the 4 hour direct flight to Chicago but then about 3 hours in, they announced we were turning back and taking a detour to the Denver airport due to a wing-flap issue. Since we were only about an hour away from Chicago, I don't know whey they chose... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports As always, I really enjoy attending the Long beach Expo since I don't have to fly or stay in hotels and get to go home each evening, not to mention I usually have quite a few regular customers who stop by my table to check out my Pretty Pennies! The Expo folks do a great job of putting this show together, making sure the dealers have what they need in a timely manner, and even allowed the dealers to set up early this year! Although there was a terrible theft of a huge Gold Rush era gold nugget (which I'll post about later in this thread), the Expo security guards were easily visible (as well as under cover) all throughout the bourse area, from the front of the room to the back of the room. No matter how much security any coin show throughout the country (not just California) may have, there are very sophisticated, determined and unscrupulous thieves usually working in conjunction with others to distract dealers so their cohorts can work their magic and slight of hand tricks to conduct their nefarious and disgusting deeds. Despite that, this show ended up being a successful show for me - it was very well attended, with Thursday being especially crowded and very busy, and I found a large amount of beautiful coins to add to my inventory. And many dealers with whom I spoke agreed that this particular show was one of their best CSNS shows as well. Cindy Wibker and the CSNS folks really did outdo themselves in putting on this show - from Dealer Day through Saturday! Also, as you will see, the hotel bar is a very popular meeting spot for dealers and collectors alike. It's a great place to see old friends and make new ones in the coin industry. For me, this show in particular seemed to fly by, from set up to tear down. I always look forward to and enjoy participating in the Long Beach Expo as I have many local friends and customers who stop by to see me. Although this show was well attended and we were very busy, I think partly due to the economy, retail business for me and several other dealers I spoke with was not as active as in past shows. However, I think everyone will agree that the buying side of our business was very active at this show. As many of you know, a huge storm was set to hit California right during the Long Beach show. Luckily, it didn't begin until after set up day! At the last show, my boothmate Rich and I discovered that it was much easier to unload and pack my one cartload out in front of the show across from the parking structure and enter through the front door, rather than arrive a couple hours early and wait in line to get in and unload in the loading dock area. So thank goodness it wasn't raining during this unloading process! Once inside, I found that I was the first dealer in line, so while Rich waited with my cart, I ventured downstairs to the trading room and did some early buying. This show was a whirlwind for me and I couldn't believe it was over when it was time to pack up on Saturday. Most dealers I spoke with said they too had a very busy and successful show. For me, quality pennies seem to be remaining strong, even in this slightly softer market. I think quality pieces in any denomination are garnering strong prices, particularly those in the new CAC holders. I found a lot of beautiful Pretty Pennies for my inventory including a scarce 1873 Double Liberty Indian cent in PCGS AU58+, a very cool Indian cent error for my collection, and some gorgeous encased Indian cents and pocket mirrors for my exonumia collection. I also enjoyed seeing several of my regular friends and customers, as well as many folks I only get to see and talk with at this show. As usual, the FUN show is a great start to the New Year! And the Music City Center is a beautiful venue for a coin show. I knew when I signed up to participate in the IMEX coin show that there would be some "growing pains" but, as has been mentioned in various threads on this forum, this show had a few more bumps than usual. Even so, I think with some tweaks and twists, this show has the potential for being a very good show. I've read several of the show reports already posted here and agree with most of the comments about the issues faced by both collectors and dealers which can be, and I believe will be, addressed for the next show. Gary and Steve are professionals and they really want this show to be a success, so I am confident they will figure out what works and what doesn't and address the concerns that have been expressed by both dealers and collectors. So let me take a few minutes to discuss some of the "new show" issues first and then I'll get into the fun and usual photo part of my show report! SIGNAGE/MARKETING: There were not enough signs directing dealers to the dealer trading room and the security room, and even the Music City Center personnel weren't aware of these locations and had to make several phone calls before they figured it out. It... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports As usual, I always look forward to the Long Beach Expo as it is basically "in my backyard" and I have many local customers who do their penny shopping at my table, plus I get to sleep in my own bed at night and I don't have to deal with airport travel, delays, connection cancellations, bags going to London, etc. ! Even though I had a good show, bought several nice coins on Wednesday during dealer set up, and was very busy on Thursday, this show was noticeably less attended than other Long Beach shows over the past few years. Many dealers I spoke with said they had a very slow show, especially on Friday. Some of the comments I heard from dealers and attendees were: (1) this show was not as marketed as well as it could have been, with minimal advertising,(2) no one liked not having to use a QR code to access the show program, they would rather have a physical program(3) the very slow internet and poor phone connections throughout the bourse was a HUGE problem (it also didn't help collectors access the QR code that would enable them to find the dealers they were looking for),(4) the $15 parking fee is a continued issue,(5) the $10 entrance fee expecially on a sparse Saturday bourse floor, and(6) the usual complaints about the vacant tables on Saturday. In spite of the above, this show was much more well organized than the past couple shows, with no major... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports WOW! What a week it was! This was one of the busiest shows I've attended, both coin-wise and social activities. That's one of the great things about attending an ANA WFM show - there is no shortage of events, banquets, classes, meetings, and activities in addition to buying and selling coins. I had something pre-planned each night I was there, and enjoyed every minute (well, maybe not so much the rain during the ballgame! ). I also found a lot of new Pretty Pennies for my inventory, much more than I thought I would. I also didn't hear any grumbling as far as how business was for other dealers. The only hard part is that by Friday or so, everyone is usually tired from being there since Sunday, all the activities and, not to mention, staying out too late every night! As you all know, the summer shows are usually smaller and less attended than the fall and winter shows, as was the case with this June Long Beach show. It also didn't help that it coincided with the EAC Convention which happened to also be on the west coast in Portland, as well as the ANA Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs. As a result, there were more empty tables at this show than even other June Long Beach shows. That being said, the Expo folks still did a great job getting folks in the door, having some amazing exhibits, and even with a parking glitch which they had no control over (the parking structure closest to the show was bought out by another event and everyone had to park further away), they did their best to make sure things ran as smoothly as possible. I ended up having a very good show, bought a bunch of new Pretty Pennies including two amazingly toned beauties that you are posted further down, and had a ton of fun seeing everyone and of course wining and dining! What a beautiful sunny day it was as my boothmate Rich and I drove to the convention center! We arrived at the loading dock early on Wednesday, went inside to register and pick up our ribbons. There was so much activity at the show this year, starting for me from the Greysheet reception on Tuesday evening all the way through the end of the show. I was busy at my table almost consistently throughout each day, then grabbing a quick drink with friends right after the show, then attending social events and dinners each evening, followed by more gatherings at the hotel bar after dinner events! And I'm really glad this one fit into my schedule as, not only did I have a really good show buying and selling, but I had so much fun getting together with different friends for dinner at new restaurants in a different city! I also found a VERY COOL coin for my personal collection - as you will see further down. Even though it's only a 6-hour drive, I decided to fly since the hotel parking was expensive as is gas, and because it's only a 1-hour flight. I arrived early on Tuesday and was surprised at how cold it was, but I and was happy to be back in Phoenix as it is a very pretty city and I hadn't been there in quite a while. Took a quick Uber ride to the Hyatt downtown which was right across the street from the main convention center. This is the view from my room. After settling in, I went to drop my bags off at security but soon found out that there was a glitch in our dealer paperwork as the ANA had forgotten to change the location of the security room from last year's show in Colorado Springs! However, thanks to a very kind and resourceful concierge man at the main convention center, I soon found that... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports As always, I love attending the Long Beach Expo as it is not too far from where I live and I can go home each night, not to mention I have a lot of local customers that I look forward to seeing and catching up with. And the weather was fantastic the whole week, bright and sunny - typical SoCal weather! The Long Beach Expo folks did a great job marketing and getting the public in the door, and not just sports fans but also many serious coin collectors. There were a few set up glitches (new process of obtaining ribbons, late entry time, no chairs/lamps, some tables not quite set up), but the facility vendor worked very diligently to make sure everyone had what they needed and everything sort of fell into place and worked out just fine. And from what I could tell, the show personnel was very eager to accommodate all the dealer's needs. Each day was very busy and crowded and many of the dealers I spoke with said it was one of their best Long Beach shows. So since the Expo introduced a new policy of picking up ribbons at the show (rather than mailing them out as they've done in the past), we arrived early on Wednesday to allow extra time to collect... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports WOW! What a show it was! ! This was one of the busiest shows I've had in a long time. Even though there were some very minor glitches on dealer set up day, the show was fantastic, with tons of public on both Thursday and Friday. Even Saturday was surprisingly busy. As many dealers commented, prices are higher especially on better quality, tougher date coins - and it's harder to find the tougher dates in better grades. However, on dealer set up day and throughout the show, I was lucky enough to acquire several nice Pretty Pennies, including an 1856 Flying Eagle cent and three scarce Flying Eagle and Indian cent pattern pieces. The days flew by - it was simply a GREAT show! As always, each January I very much look forward to the FUN show - this show always seems to start the year off with a bang! I got to the airport early on Tuesday, sailed through TSA, and had lots of extra time before my flight so I grabbed a refreshing Bloody Mary before I began my long trek to Orlando. I was a little apprehensive about my flight after hearing the airline horror stories over the previous few days, but the only glitch was a a 1/2 hour delay leaving cloudy Orange County. My only concern was that my layover in Houston was less than an hour, but luckily the gate we arrived at was only a few gates away from my next departing gate... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports Once again, it was time for my favorite coin show - the Long Beach Expo! During this show, however, I didn't have any helpers due to some family obligations, so for the first time since I've been setting up at the Long Beach show I was by myself. For security reasons, I don't usually like to work a corner table at a major show by myself, and while I was super busy and tried not to leave my table much, everything worked out just fine. I also made sure my security camera and warning sign were clearly visible. As a result of not having a helper, I wasn't able to leave my table very often during the show so I didn't take as many photos as I usually do. However, when I did need to take care of something away from my table, I called a friend who was walking the show and he would help me, and so did Angel Dees' wife, Allyne - she was a super sweetheart and would sit at my table while I dashed away for a few minutes. It's really wonderful to have good friends in this business who don't mind helping out! So Wednesday was set up as usual, except that we've been having unordinary hot and humid weather which made set up day very uncomfortable especially since there was no air conditioning in the hall while the loading doors were open. While it wasn't quite the blockbuster show last year's was, it was quite busy, very well attended, and flew by! I was busy every day, bought a lot of great newps, sold some of them and much more, spent time with some great friends, attended some club meetings, saw some amazing competitive exhibits, really loved viewing the rare and very cool coins at the ANA museum exhibits, and especially enjoyed the fantastic Central America artifacts display which I understand was being displayed in full for the first time at this show - photos of all of these exhibits you will see later in this report! I did read some negative comments on another "show report" about certain aspects of this show, but I personally thought overall it was a very successful show and after speaking with several other dealers, they all felt pretty much the same. Everyone thought last year's show, of course, was one of the best shows we've had in many years, but that this year's ANA was still successful, busy, and well attended. Most dealers felt that having Heritage and Stacks auction lot viewing off site was inconvenient, but that was because GreatCollections is now the official ANA auction company (for which they pay a hefty fee) so it was my understanding that the other auction companies were not allowed to have onsite auction lot viewing as they were no longer "paying" for this privilege. Since there are... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports As always, I really look forward the Long Beach show since it's basically in my back yard and I can sleep in my own bed each night. And this show didn't disappoint! I really enjoy the new hall, it's easy to load/unload, easy and close to park, with lots of friendly familiar faces! (By the way, I finally upgraded my phone to the iPhone 13 and it's fancy high quality camera did not disappoint, especially when it came time to take close up photos of people as you'll see later in this report! ) The loading dock is large and spacious and you don't have to wait in line to pull into the lot and unload. The only waiting is for the bourse to open for set up! While we were waiting, my friend Matt who had a room at the Hyatt right across from the convention center, stood at the balcony that overlooked the loading dock and waived to us! Curt even gave me one of PCGS's 2022 sample slabs The PCGS folks were cheerfully celebrating a birthday... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports Wow! this was such a busy show with lots of new coin purchases that I'm just now finally digging out from my post-show paperwork, coin inventorying, processing, and website updating, not to mention a long day trying to get home from Chicago during a huge thunder storm and tornado watch that occurred Saturday evening. The CSNS folks pulled out all the stops to make this a successful show, and in spite of some unforeseen helper issues, from all accounts, they greatly succeeded. There were even record lines of folks waiting to enter the show on the first day! A few days before I left for Chicago, I had just returned from another show which followed a series of back-to-back shows. The CSNS show was the last one I would be attending for a while in that string of shows. While I was really tired, I still very much looked forward to being back in the Chicago area as I suspected from all the pre-show publicity, this CSNS show would be a very well-attended and active show. I left bright and sunny OC for the show on Tuesday so I could attend the PNG dealer day on Wednesday. Coincidentally, there were several other coin dealers on my same flight! I never get tired of viewing the OC shoreline from up in the air, it's always beautiful and breathtaking. Flying into the Chicago area is also equally breathtaking! I rode to the Renaissance with a couple other coin friends, and checked into... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports I actually had not intended to do a show report for this show as I had just prepared my Baltimore report before leaving for this show, and needed some time to take care of several business and other items. However, while at the Tukwila show, I happened to pick up a few interesting items, including a low-grade complete Lincoln cent set from a fascinating 11-year old boy. Even though I did enjoy some great food and wine, I didn't take any photos so, sorry, but there won't be the usual photos of people, places and wine for this brief show report. ;-) However, I did want to share the story of the 11-year old and the other interesting items I picked up at the show. First, another dealer brought me this old ANACS cert card and coin to take a look at. Of course, these old ANACS certification grading cards are collectible by themselves, but what was interesting about this one was that it came with the actual envelope that the coin and card were shipped back to the customer in dated 1982. I can say I've never seen one of these old original postmarked envelopes from ANACS, so I thought that was very cool. However, when I opened the envelope, out popped a 1909-s vdb coin and certification card! That was the icing on the cake! The other interesting thing I picked up at this show was a penny "prison art" bracelet with 6 penny charms attached. I already... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports WOW! What a show! Every dealer I spoke with said this was one of their best Long Beach shows ever, and it was one of mine too! Thursday was especially busy, so busy that we never stopped to grab a snack and my boothmate ended up passing out - more on that later! Any way, this show was a really fantastic show all the way around. This is our second time at the new hall, and I think now that folks are getting used to its location which is right next to the aquarium, they're liking it better than the old hall. And the loading area is right behind the aquarium and is exclusive to our event. Most everyone I talked to said they are liking this location because the parking is right across the front entrance and there are no stairs to navigate up/down to get to the bourse floor. Also, the bourse floor is rectangular rather than triangular which seems easier for everyone to navigate. PCGS set up a lounge area to give people some space to organize and prepare their submissions before they get in line so it speeds up submissions. Set up went quickly and smoothly, then I took some time to shop around the bourse for customer want list items. I also had just acquired a complete set of Indian cents in MS63/64 RB and an almost complete set of Lincoln cents in MS64 RD. Unfortunately, except for the 1877, all of the Indian cents... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports Sorry this is a bit late, it's been a very busy week trying to dig out since I returned from the FUN show. IT was a really great show, and I was very busy with both sales and purchases. I worked hard trying to find coins for my customers as well as to fill holes in my inventory. The market is still quite strong, especially the penny market which remains very popular. Nice quality better dates have been harder and harder to find and are getting very strong prices. In some cases, I've been having to pay over the PCGS guide prices just to acquire quality key and semi-key dates. In any event, it was a very active show and from all accounts, very successful! As with every FUN show I've attended, I was very excited to be once again participating in this show as it's always the best show of the year! I left beautiful sunny Orange County for Orlando on Sunday since I had some pre-show business to take care of. For those of you who are interested in the aerial photos, planes take off from the John Wayne airport and fly up very fast to help with noise abatement, then they level off and (depending on winds) usually head west over the ocean before they turn around and head back east (or north or south), again to minimize noise over very expensive houses. There's also a curfew so no planes can take off or land before 7am... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports It's been two years since the last Baltimore show was held so there was lots of excitement and anticipation before this show - and the show did not disappoint! Lori and her team did an amazing job promoting the show, making sure things ran smoothly and the dealers had what they needed. As many of you know, quality coins have been hard to find and buy "reasonably" this past year so I didn't buy as much as I usually do at the large shows. Some coins I really liked were selling for quite a bit more than usual retail prices which isn't surprising right now. I did most of my buying before the show at the dealer trading room and found some very nice pieces to add to my inventory. I also found a few neat pennies during the show, including a gorgeous 25% red 1955/55 DDO PCGS MS64+ BN and a beautiful tough to find 1877 PCGS AU58. I was busy for most of each day and overall sales were really good. The best part for me was that I got to see some of my dealer buddies who I haven't seen in two years, especially the group that attended our Black Olive dinner event on Friday night! I have very much looked forward to finally attending the Long Beach show as it's one of my very favorite coin shows! I especially looked forward to seeing all my dealer friends and local customers. It seemed like the last show was such a long time ago. I know many folks felt that having to follow the extra state-mandated Covid requirements was too restrictive and would hamper the attendance at the Long Beach show. However, let me say that many dealers, including me, felt this was one of the best Long Beach shows we've had in a long time. ! I was a little concerned about how this new hall would work out, especially the loading/unloading dock. Also, the Long Beach Grand Prix had just concluded and the area around the convention center was still messy and obstructive with all the barriers, spectator stands, and fences that still hadn't been removed. I arrived extra early to scope it all out but found that it was actually very easy to find since the Long Beach Expos folks had sent out a detailed map, and there was a lot more room to get in and out with. So my booth buddy Rich and I unloaded the car and waited for noon when we could set up. While we waited, we watched the Expo staff put finishing touches around the bourse floor. I am so happy that I got to be at a coin show again and this one was absolutely fantastic! It was the best show by far that I ever had! Another fun, busy and successful Long Beach show has come and gone! I love going to the Portland show since it's an easy 2 1/2 days, and is on my same coast which makes it a quick and easy flight. Plus Portland is a really pretty city with some great places to dine! In general, this is a much more relaxing show than most of the national shows I do, so I have time to walk around and check out everyone's inventory and chat with my dealer friends. It's never been a blockbuster show for me, but it's always worth it to participate and the PNNA folks do a great job catering to the dealers and public as well. (By the way, some of my photos will be smaller than usual because I'm having some technical difficulties transferring them to my computer. ) I left sunny and warm OC Friday morning, flew right over Catalina island on our way north, and landed in Portland around 10:30am. After set up on Friday, we went to... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports Another Long Beach show has come and gone - and it seemed to happen so quickly! I always enjoy being at the Long Beach show and seeing all my friends and regular customers, as well as meeting new folks! Most people I spoke with about this show said it was slower than the usual September show. I know several usual east coast dealers weren't there, possibly due to the storms. For me, Wednesday I did my usual buying, and Thursday was busy, but Friday was slow, then Saturday was surprisingly busy. Overall, it turned out to be a B+ show for me, both buying and selling. I know the expo folks work really hard to please both the dealers and the collectors. I'm sure it's not easy sometimes working with us dealers, trying to meet all our needs yet run the business of putting on a successful show, but they in my view they do a great job. And they also work hard at getting the public in the doors with special promotions, free passes to any collector wanting to attend the show, great door prizes, and a fun and entertaining treasure hunt for the kids. Being a creature of habit, whenever I attend the Long Beach show, I enjoy going to the same restaurants as before (and usually with the same group of people), mostly because they have such good food. And this makes it a bit of a challenge to write a show report that doesn't look like... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports I always look forward to the ANA's World's Fair of Money show as there are a lot of events and activities in addiiton to the buying and selling of coins. I had several business and club meetings, a presentation, and some cocktail receptions to attend, so I was doing preparation for this show a few weeks before I left. As is typical for the WFM show, I knew it was going to be a very busy week! I was very pleased to see that the popular CBS Sunday Morning show even had the WFM show on their upcoming week's calendar! I left OC on Sunday afternoon, with lots of enthusiasm for the week ahead and, about four hours later we were landing in Chicago. I stayed at the Hyatt which has a beautiful lobby and interior, however, the rooms are a bit dated and the bathrooms are very small. It does have a walkway from the hotel to the convention center, but boy oh boy is it long and sort of like a mouse maze! However, it is covered and air conditioned! The Hyatt happened to be having a Beatles festival that weekend and Sunday night was their last event. Since Rick Snow is a big Beatles fan, he and Kenny met me at the hotel for the tribute concert being held that evening by a band called Liverpool. They were very good and played songs from the Abbey Road album. Monday morning I headed over to the convention center... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports I was anticipating that this Long Beach show, like other June Long Beach shows, would be on the slow side, but I was pleasantly surprised to find overall it was quite a busy show with both abundant coins to buy and very active sales. As usual, I arrived at the loading dock Wednesday morning, unloaded my car at the bottom of the ramp, and me and my booth mate Rich then pushed the loaded cart up the ramp to wait for the noon setup to begin. With two booth helpers, set up went smoothly and quickly, and soon vest pocket dealers were stopping by my table showing me lots of Pretty Pennies. My bff Cindi stopped by to say hi. She had just bought this moose puzzle for her sister. It wasn't long before my good friend Victor and his brother-in-law Clark who just flew in from New Zealand came by my table. He flew to the United States just to pick up some coins, and submit some others to PCGS for show grading. Yes, he is a very passionate numismatist! And they even brought me a nice bottle of Australian wine. We opened that bottle of wine and shared it together - it was very tasty and we all enjoyed it immensely. After the show, we went to our usual Wednesday night spot for dinner, Cafe Piccolos, with my long-time foreign coin dealer friends, Karl and Joanne Stephens, and my dear friend Ron Guth, as well as my boothmate... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports With all the harsh weather the east has been getting lately, and the several flight issues I had last year around this time, I was a little apprehensive about traveling to the Pittsburgh show. But I was very pleasantly surprised to find out I didn't even need to bring my heavy coat. The weather in Pittsburgh was beautiful, as was the city itself with the three rivers and those hundreds of very cool bridges. The convention center was also one of the more open, well lit and architectually eye appealing convention centers I've been to. Overall, the show itself was on the soft side, with slow sales and a lower public attendance. That being said, I don' think I've been in a more friendlier town than Pittsburgh! I left OC on Tuesday morning and, as usual, we flew out over the ocean before turning around and heading east. I never get tired of seeing the gorgeous Newport Harbor and the Orange County coastline from the air! I had a connection in Denver, and must say that the view from the air of the snowy Colorado mountains was equally as amazing as the California coastline! Flying from coast to coast, especially with a connection, is an all-day ordeal and leaves me drained at the end of the day. I finally arrived in Pittsburgh late Tuesday night, checked into my room, and went straight to bed. Set up was Wednesday at 1pm, so I slept in before heading over to the convention... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports I was really concerned about making it to this show since I got stuck in Houston during last year's March show and had to turn around and go home. With all the recent harsh weather especially on the east coast, I began to think it was going to be de ja vu all over again. But I am thrilled to say that I had no travel or weather issues whatsoever, it was smooth sailing all the way there and home! I arrived at the John Wayne airport early Thursday - this is me very happy to be headed to Baltimore! So I decided to start my trip off right with a delicious Bloody Mary. Orange County had just been through a lot of heavy rain, but it was nice and sunny the morning I left I can't remember what part of the country we were over when I took this photo, but the white mountains were beautiful! I changed planes in Chicago where it was really, really cold just groing from the plane to the terminal! There was still snow out on the tarmac in Chicago. I finally arrived in Baltimore late Thursday night, went straight to my hotel and to bed because I had some early morning appointments, including to pick up a nice group of pennies in scarce old Doily holders that a dealer had called me about (I posted these in an earlier thread). I left for Oxnard the day after the show ended to meet up with my brothers and sister so we could spread my Dad's ashes out to sea as he wanted, and to spend the week cleaning out my parents' home where they lived since 1959. I just got back home and this is the first chance I've had to write up a show report. Needless to say, t's been a long and emotional week. But we did make some great finds in my folks' closets, some of which I'll share with you at the end of this report. Now back to Long Beach... . You know many of us are creatures of habit, and whenever I attend the Long Beach show, it seems this is even more true than for any other show I attend. I usually see the same faces, shop with the same dealers, and dine at the same restaurants - all of which I look forward to. So this report may seem a little redundant from past Long Beach show reports, but I will try to throw in some unique aspects as well. Well, they obviously did a great job putting everything together... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports Having had a 6-week hiatus away from shows, I was REALLY looking forward to the FUN show. For me, it's always been the best show of the year, both buying and selling. And this show did not disappoint. I've read a few reports with mixed reviews, but based on my personal experience at this FUN show, it was super busy and very successful. On Wednesday I did most of my buying, and on Thursday, I never even left my table until 5pm. Friday was a little slower than Thursday, but still had very steady traffic. As you all know, since I specialize in copper, I personally can't gauge how the market in general is doing. I can say that based on my sales, quality Indian and Lincoln cents are still strong and popular, but early copper seems to have flattened over the last year. But if you're looking for what's going on in the coin market as a whole or reports on how bullion was selling, perhaps you may want stop reading here. So... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports I realize there are a lot of terrible things going on in the world right now, but my own little world was recently shattered and my heart broken because my hero, the man I looked up to most in my entire life, the man who taught me integrity, hard work and respect, the last link to my childhood - my amazing dad - has died. (Ok, my hubby comes in a close second. ) My dad who was 97 and one of the last few Pearl Harbor Survivors passed away just a few days before I left for the Portland PNNA show. I tried really hard to keep it together during the show, but at times it was hard because every time some kind person would come up to me to offer condolences, I would get choked up and couldn't speak. But I got through it and even managed to take a few photos for a short report. Wine helped. Then I went straight from Portland to Baltimore and had to do it all over again. Although being at these coin shows was a good distraction, it was still hard to keep from tearing up every time someone offered their sweet and heartfelt condolences. Again, wine helped. More on that later. Overall, the show was good, not the best show I've had for selling, but it was great for buying. Also, it is a fun city to visit and tour, with lots of wonderful and interesting historical sites to see. So I headed for Philly the Saturday before the show so I could see some of the sites before the show started. This is me so very happy to be going to the Philly ANA! As many of you know we are having lots of wild fires out here in California, and as we flew out of Orange County you could see all the smoke from the hills in OC/Riverside that were still burning last week. I arrived in Chicago to make my connection to Philly, only to find out my connection was slightly delayed due to the storms over Philly. So I grabbed a drink while awaiting my flight. I kept getting updates showing my flight was delayed even further, first 15 minutes, then 1/2 hour, then another hour, then two hours. Last weekend we were very fortunate to celebrate my dad's 97th birthday! Many of you have heard me talk about him being in the Navy and a Pearl Harbor survivor, so we are especially proud to still have him with us. With less shows during the summer, I especially look forward to each show I do attend. And the Long Beach show is one of my favorite shows since it is so close and I get to see a lot of my local friends and customers, as well as sleep in my own bed each night! I arrived as usual to the loading dock area around 10:30 am the noon set up time. Since they only let a handful of cars up at the loading area at a time, it helps to be there early. Instead of waiting in the long car line, I decided to pull next to the ramp, unload my inventor onto my cart, and my booth helper and I pushed the cart up the ramp to the back door and waited to be let in at noon. That was much quicker than waiting for each car to go up the ramp, unload, and eventually move their car. Sorry for the late report folks! Since I babysit my grandson when I'm not traveling, it takes me quite a bit longer to get things done. But he's so adorable and I am very grateful that I get to spend so much time with this little guy. Every year I especially look forward to the FUN show. It is so well run and attended, especially since the FUN show folks help subsidize the cost to bus collectors from various clubs around the state. I happened to acquire a couple nice PCGS collections, a complete Lincoln cent set 1909-1964 in PCGS MS64-MS67, and a complete Indian cent set all PCGS MS65 RB, so I had some nice fresh material to offer my customers and had a really good show, with lots of activity from the minute the show opened until late in the day. From what I heard, overall everyone said it was a very good show but as expected, quality material is harder to find. I left warm sunny Orange County on Tuesday morning, flew into very cold Dallas for my connecting flight and ran into a few fellow coin dealers waiting for the same flight. We were about an hour delayed waiting for a replacement flight attendance, and when we finally boarded, they still had to de-ice the plane. Soon we were off! I checked into the Marriott and had a beautiful view... - Categories: Charmy's Coin Show Reports I've read some of the Long Beach show reports and I have to agree with them - this was one of the busiest and well-attended Long Beach shows in a long time. Thanks to Taryn and Cassi and the rest of the folks who worked hard to put this show together - from the fantastic Central America Ship of Gold, to the amazing Tyrants of the Thames display of "The World's Most Valuable Private Coin Collection," and even the Miller/Harrison Morgan Dollar set on display at the PCGS table. This was such a great show and I was so busy that I didn't even have a chance to take as many photos that I usually do! I arrived early on Wednesday as usual to wait in line to get up to the loading dock which they usually don't open until just before noon, but I was very pleasantly surprised to see that they were letting people up right away. So I was able to unload and go park the car early which allowed someone else to do the same thing. Then we waited outside the loading door until noon. The city is getting ready for the Long Beach Grand Prix and the course goes right in front and behind the convention center, so there is lots of construction activity along the streets. Since I missed the Baltimore show, I was especially looking forward to buying and selling coins and seeing my friends at the Central States Show. It turned out to be a pretty good show, better for buying than selling, but overall I did a lot of both. I got to the airport Tuesday morning, sailed through TSA and decided to just hang out at my gate and listen to my audio book. We took off to the west as usual, flew out over Newport Beach and the ocean, then turned south then east. Just over three hours later we were landing in Chicago. O'Hare is a pretty large airport and it seemed like it took forever for me to get to baggage claim. Luckily Rick and his son Kenny were arriving not long after me and were renting a car, so I just waited for them, and soon we were checking into the hotel.
